Next spring I will remove a flowering crab tree from the front of my house due to its very unappealing appearance after it flowers. Since it's in the front of my house, it gets alot of attention so I'd like to plant another small tree or large shrub there that is more attractive and appealing the rest of the summer and fall. It should get no more than 10-15 feet in height and will receive afternoon sun. Do you have any suggestions?

There are a number of cold hardy smaller ornamental trees and shrubs you might try, including some of the newer crabapple varieties which are disease resistant and do manage to stay looking presentable all season. Other possibilities might be the smaller deciduous magnolias (M.stellata for example) or some of the viburnums (V. x burkwoodii or perhaps V. prunifolium).
