| Cabbage is a cool-season crop, and makes its best growth in the early spring or late summer when the weather is on the coolish side. The summer heat made your cabbage bolt (grow a flowering seed head). Try planting your seeds earlier in the season, or choose a heat-resistant cultivar like 'Savoy King'. Cole crops are not too particular about soil, but loose, well-amended planting beds will produce healthier plants. Turnips also grow best in cool weather. Ample moisture and temperatures of 50F - 70F degrees encourage rapid root growth. Before planting, work the soil well, add some compost or other organic matter, and plant the seeds about mid-summer for a late fall crop. |
