The Q&A Archives: Saffron From Crocus

Question: Can I harvest saffron from my fall blooming crocus? I do not know the botanical name of my plants.

Answer: Saffron is harvested from Crocus sativus, a spring-bloomer. It takes 100,000 blossoms to produce one pound of saffron! Your fall-blooming crocus are actually Colchicum, a different family from the true Crocus.
