The Q&A Archives: Fall Vegetables

Question: Are there vegetables I can plant in fall in western PA for spring harvest? Late fall harvest?

Answer: If you use a cold frame or another method of protection, you should be able to harvest into late fall and then overwinter Swiss chard, lettuces, spinach and other greens for early spring harvest. Additional vegetables can be harvested up to 4 weeks or more after frost, but they need to be planted months in advance. These would include broccoli, cabbage, carrots, peas, lettuce, spinach, Swiss chard and so on.
