Salsify grows well in the Northeast part of the U.S. but I was wondering if the climate here in the San Francisco area was not quite cool enough for this Autumn and early Spring root plant to grow.

Salsify is a hardy biennial that will grow well in the San Francisco area. The plant grows to 4 feet tall with grasslike, narrow leaves. Give it rich, deep, sandy soil in a sunny garden spot. Salsify will take 150 days to grow to maturity. Harvest the root at the end of the season. If allowed to overwinter, the plant will produce a flower stalk topped with a large head of lavender-purple flowers.
