The Q&A Archives: Aphids on Asparagus

Question: Last summer my asparagus patch had a large aphid infestation problem. We sprayed and in the fall when we cut back the stalks a lot of them seemed rotten or hollow. We are concerned we may not have a crop this year. Is there anything we can do other than wait and see? Mary Williams Napa, CA

Answer: The aphids shouldn't have caused the hollow stems of your asparagus. You were right to cut and destroy the old stalks. Unless you've seen other symptoms on the fronds such as dying leaves or stalks during the growing season, I would say the asparagusshould come back fine in spring..
