The Q&A Archives: Fading Coleus

Question: I have coleus planted in a spot in my front yard and they are starting to look terrible - fading leaf color and just look sick - what is wrong?

Answer: The color in the leaves of coleus will be more vibrant if the plants are in a bright, but shady location. Perhaps yours are getting too much sunshine. The plants grow best in rich, loose, well-drained soil, and need lots of water and fertilizer during the spring and summer months. You might try pinching your plants back to encourage new leaf growth and to keep them bushy. They should perk up after this treatment.
