Whenever you prune a plant you encourage new growth. In the autumn months most plants will be slowing their growth and getting ready for winter dormancy. Pruning now might shock them into growing, making them more susceptible to early frosts. Since it's late in the season, your plant will be better off if you wait until springtime to prune.
