The Q&A Archives: Tomato Varieties for Sitka, AK (Zone 7)

Question: Is the Fourth of July tomato a variety that I could plant in my zone? By the way, what zone am I in? What other varieties of vegetables would you recommend for Alaska? Also, do you ship plants this far, and if I order them on-line is shipping free? When would be a good time to place an order? I would say our planting time is from June 1 to September 30. Thank you in advance for your assistance. Kay Steffey Sitka, AK

Answer: Sitka, Alaska is located in zone 7. The best tomatoes to grow would be ones adapted to your warm, wet climate such as Oregon Spring, Northern Exposure and Siletz. Oregon Spring and Siletz are available from, Territorial Seed Company, 20 Palmer Ave., Cottage Grove, OR 97424, 541-942-9547. They also list many varieties adapated in to the Northwest, so would be good selections for your area. I'd avoid warm season crops such as melons, okra and lima beans, but you can grow just about everything else. Burpee does ship to Alaska and will charge a shipping fee. Place order early to get the varieties before they sell out!.
