I have 5 miniature buckaroo roses that are doing quite well at present and covered in blooms. Do I prune them back to the ground for winter and if so, what time is appropriate to do so? Also, does it help to cover them in mulch?

To help your roses prepare for winter, allow the flowers to remain until the petals fall and the bases of the flowers swell. These 'rose hips' signal the plant that the season is over, and new growth should slow. Don't prune your roses until spring but do mulch them if your weather gets 20F degrees or below. If you need to mulch, wait until after the first frost, pull off all the leaves and cut off the 'hips', then mound coarse material, such as shredded bark, pine needles, leaves or straw around them.
