The Q&A Archives: Using Used Aquarium Water to Fertilize

Question: I've looked through tons of gardening books, but can't find the answer to whether I can (or should) add my used aquarium water to my garden. I've read references to fish emulsion, is this the same thing? Renee Tertin Lone Rock, WI

Answer: I'd say it okay to use the old fish water from your tank as long as you weren't adding any antibiotics to the fish water. It's basically similar to fish emulsion, just more diluted. Your plants will get a boost of nitrogen from the fish water and your fish will be happier with the clean water too!
