| Your pecans should be pruned at the end of the dormant season, before spring growth begins. While you certainly can remove a limb or two anytime of the year, most pruning is done in the late dormant season, as the majority of wound healing occurs in early to mid spring. Pecans need very little pruning. Young trees (less than 5 years old) should have narrow branch angles removed to prevent later breakage. Rubbing and damaged branches may be removed and a vigorous, upright trunk shoot may be cut back by about 1/3 of the previous year's growth to promote side branching. Lower branches (too low to walk under) should be removed after they are greater than 1" in diameter. Good luck with your pecan trees! |
