The Q&A Archives: Using Shredded Paper for Compost

Question: I have access to shredded computer paper and was wondering if it can be used for mulch and/or in the compost heap? Also can colored paper be used in the same way? Neal Oeser St.Johnsville, NY

Answer: The shredded computer paper should be fine in the compost pile. Even though many colored papers now use soy based inks, I'd still be leary of adding colored paper to the compost pile because of the potential for heavy metal contaminants. You can also use computer paper as a mulch in your garden and it will decompose by fall without you having to do anything!
