There are many different kinds of ivy used as groundcover. If you're thinking of the common English Ivy (Hedera helix), there are a tremendous number of varieties. In general, unless they are bred to be compact or slow-growing, they will keep growing until something stops them! The vines root all along their length where the growing nodes touch the soil, and this supports the plant to grow and grow and grow! They may need trimming to keep them within desired boudaries. Enjoy!
