The Q&A Archives: Deterring Squirrels from the Garden

Question: The squirrels seem to enjoy nipping off the buds of my daffodils and cutting off my rose buds. I've tried red pepper, dried blood, human hair, also keeping available lots of alternative foods (sunflower seeds, bird feed), but no luck. Any suggestions? Thank you. Janice Rehmus Moline, IL

Answer: You're trying all the right sprays to get rid of those pesky squirrels. You might want to try a few commercial sprays such as Ropel and Hinder. Also, You can try trapping the worse offenders out with a Hav A Hart trap baited with seeds. These traps should be available at local rental stores. Move the critters at least 10 miles away before releasing. Other than that, perhaps a good cat will help!
