Answer: Try hostas, bleeding heart, foxglove for the shaded area if this area provides only partial shade. If it is a deeper shade try ferns. All these are herbaceous (they die back to the ground each winter). You might also consider shrubs as well...red-leafed Japanese barberry, euonymous, or slender or lemoine deutzias if it is partial shade.
