The Q&A Archives: Shade-Loving Plants for Zones 4-5

Question: I live right between zones 4

Answer: Try hostas, bleeding heart, foxglove for the shaded area if this area provides only partial shade. If it is a deeper shade try ferns. All these are herbaceous (they die back to the ground each winter). You might also consider shrubs as Japanese barberry, euonymous, or slender or lemoine deutzias if it is partial shade. Buy your plants from a local nursery that propagates its own plants. You will then be assured that those plants will survive in your climatic zone! Good Luck!
