| The reported germination rate of sequoia seed ranges from 30 to 40 percent, so plan accordingly when you sow your seeds. The seed requires a cold treatment prior to germination, and warmth and light to sprout. Begin by placing the seeds in moistened growing medium, sealing in a plastic bag, and putting in the refrigerator for 4 weeks. Then sow the seeds on top of moistened seed starting mix in pots or flats, and press them in with your hand. Cover with plastic wrap to help retain moisture and place the pots or flats in a warm place like on top of the refrigerator, or on propagation mats that will supply bottom heat.
