When is the best time of year to plant azaleas? What about hydrangeas? |
Container grown shrubs in general may be planted year round in the south. Perhaps the best time to set out azaleas is in mid to late fall with late winter being the next best time. This gives them time to start to establish a root system before the onset of hot, summer weather. Hydrangeas, being cold tender in your area, should probably be set out in spring after danger of frost is past. You can continue to plant them throughout the growing season, although it would begin to get a bit riskier after September, as the new plants would have less time to establish and get ready for winter.
