The Q&A Archives: Best Methods for Removing Oak Stumps

Question: What it is the best method to have the stump and roots of an oak tree removed? I would prefer a chemical application rather than grinding or digging. V. Clemente Port Washington, NY

Answer: I have heard that the stump remover products that are commonly sold really don't quicken the rotting process. If you'd like to try one, though, apply it to the top of the stump and then cover the stump with plastic to keep it moist and dark-- just what rotting organisms like. This should speed it along a little, but definitely not as fast as grinding the stump out.
