The Q&A Archives: Shade Loving Shrubs

Question: I have a camellia planted next to my house in front of my dining room window. My house is very tall. I don't think it's getting enough light. It gets sun only in the very late afternoon. I plan on moving the camellia but would like to put something showy in that spot. Any suggestions?

Answer: Your camellia may be as adapted to a shady spot as any "showy" plant will be. I have seen camellia bloom in quite a bit of shade. One suggestion would be to trim some limbs on any tree(s) that might be reducing its light. The effect would be to brighten the shade. Azaleas and hydrangeas are other options to consider for that spot.
