The Q&A Archives: Best Mulches for Tomato Plants

Question: I will be helping a neighbor with his tomato gardening this year. Is there any type of material that is best for mulching around the plants? Darrin Snyder Oceanside, CA

Answer: Once the tomatoes are transplanted and established, then mulch around them with hay or straw mulch laid around the plants about 4" deep. This will keep the soil moist, weeds away and help keep the roots cool from a hot summer sun.
