Answer: Your plants are probably succumbing to a fungus such as the one that causes the disease known as "damping off". To remedy the problem, start with a fresh, disease free growing mix. Garden soil and used mixes are notorious for harboring such diseases. You can treat seedling with a fungicide to combat fungal problems, but it is much better to avoid the problems by using a clean (sterile) mix.
