The Q&A Archives: Controlling White Stringy Mass from Giant White Fly

Question: What is the source of the white stringy mass associated with giant white flies? Is it a secretion from the insect or is it a fungus? Malcolm Law San Diegom, CA

Answer: The Giant white fly is larger than the common white fly, (but still not huge) and does exude copious amounts of a white, waxy filament material when feeding. Control this whitefly as you would other white flies, by spraying insecticidal soap on the undersides of the leaves on a regular basis and trap then with a yellow sticky traps hung near the plants.
