The Q&A Archives: Care for Indoor Ficus

Question: Do I need to prune my indoor ficus plant? The big leaves have fallen off, but it has small new growth. What should I do now to make it full again? Also, how much light should this plant have?

Answer: Ficus almost always go through a transition period when brought into the house. They shed their greenhouse leaves to put on new, dry-air house leaves. Simply allow the plant to adjust, wait for the new foliage to mature, then prune out any branches that don't fill in appropriately or are out of bounds . This will encourage the balance of the plant to fill in better. Ficus prefers full direct sunlight but is tolerant of conditions less than that, including strong fluorescent lights only.
