| After planting my cyclamen about two years ago they are not flowering, however they are living because their heart shaped foliage grows in the fall. These are planted outside in a mostly shaded well drained area. Any suggestions for why the cyclamen are not blooming? |
| Hardy cyclamen (such as Cyclamen coum or C. hederifolium) generally does best in partial shade and well-drained soil. It grows slowly, with the clump expanding little by little over the years and occasionally seeding down nearby. Normally, the flowers and foliage appear together in the fall, and the plant goes dormant for the rest of the year. Generally speaking this is not a very demanding plant and does its best when left undisturbed, so it is difficult to guess why yours is not flowering. However, it is possible that the plants are still too immature to flower (they need time to reestablish after transplanting and some of the cyclamen on the market are truly very small young starts), or perhaps need a bit more sunlight to build their energy for blooming. Since the foliage is growing normally, I suspect that another year or two may simply be needed for them to begin blooming well (they improve every year).
