Bonsai refers to a kind of pruning technique, not to any particular tree or shrub, so the winter care would depend upon what you're growing as a Bonsai. If the tree typically lives outdoors in your area, you can safely leave it outside in the elements both summer and winter. If it's an indoor tree, it should be kept indoors during the winter. I have a 40 year old pine tree that sits in a two-inch high dish, and we keep it outdoors all year around, in rain, sleet, hail or snow. I do take it off the table and place it on the ground if we get high wind warnings, but other than that, it's quite happy outdoors in any weather. Try to find out what kind of tree you're growing and then treat it accordingly. It will reward you with elegance in the years to come.
