My name is Sonya and I am a student at Granville Central School. My class would like to know if we can start and grow peanut seeds in our classroom. Can we plant them in a large pot and grow them in the room? Is it possible to plant the seeds in peat pots and then transfer them outside at a later date? I read a story about peanuts and now we would like to try to grow them in our room. Thank you.

Yes, you can grow them if you get raw, UNroasted peanuts. (You may be able to get these at a grocery store, or you may need to go to a health food store.) For fastest germination, remove the outer shell or pod, then soak the seeds overnight before planting. Peanuts prefer light, well-drained soil. They need a long growing season (about 5 months), so you can start them indoors then transplant them outdoors when the weather warms up.

You might contact the Georgia Peanut Commission, PO Box 967, Tifton, GA 31793, for more information about this amazing plant. Good luck!
