| We are looking for a hardy hedge to supplement a fench line, preferably fast growing, but more importantly, long lived. Which have the longest "life spans"? We like the barberry. |
| If properly planted and maintained, any of the following plants will make long-lived hedges: Abelia grandiflora, Bamboo, Barberry, Cotoneaster, Escallonia, Euonymus, Ligustrum, Nandina, Photinia, Thuja and Taxus. Most can be pruned or sheared to renew their appearance, and most can be expected to live 20-30 years. Prepare the site well before planting by amending the soil with organic matter to help retain moisture and release nutrients to the roots. After planting, mulch the soil to help suppress weeds. As the mulch material decomposes it will supply additional nutrients to the plants. Supply at least one inch of water per week to the plants until they become established, and then water during the hottest summer months to keep them healthy and vigorous. |
