[ Intermediate Bearded Iris (Iris 'Devil May Care') | Posted on November 20, 2018 ]

I love the contrasting orange beard on this beautiful dark purple iris. It grows and multiplies well in my zone 8a SC garden.

[ Jade Plant (Crassula ovata) | Posted on September 19, 2018 ]

Grow Jade tree (crassula ovata) in a bright location, and pot in standard houseplant soil. Keep the soil somewhat dry all year. Interestingly, more plants can be be easily obtained by propagating from leaf cuttings.

[ Finger Jade (Crassula ovata 'Gollum') | Posted on September 19, 2018 ]

I love this plant, as it is so easy to care for. It does well in full sun in my zone 8a covered porch, which does provide some shade from the late afternoon hot sun. It stays in its clay pot outdoors, unless freezing weather is predicted.

[ Clematis 'Dr. Ruppel' | Posted on September 19, 2018 ]

This clematis is fairly easy to grow in my zone 8a SC garden and thrives in full sun. Its blooms do not fade in intense sunshine.

[ Firebush (Hamelia patens) | Posted on September 19, 2018 ]

This plant dies down to the ground after hard frost (in my SC zone 8a garden) and gleefully returns each spring. It's a hummingbird magnet. I was able to root a cutting this summer, which I will share with a gardening buddy.

[ Corn Plant (Dracaena fragrans) | Posted on August 27, 2017 ]

Older mature specimens will flower yearly. The lovely blooms are very fragrant, especially at night.

[ Curly Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum 'Bonnie') | Posted on August 27, 2017 ]

This plant has lovely curly leaves, but I don't think that it grows and multiplies as quickly as the common C. Comosum. All chrolorophytums look great in hanging baskets.

[ Joseph's Coat (Alternanthera ficoidea 'True Yellow') | Posted on August 27, 2017 ]

This is a charming little plant that likes part-sun conditions. It makes a great front of the border plant and plays well with companions. I love its chartreuse-colored leaves, as they really stand out. The plant also has a nice mounding form and stays that way all season. It's not hardy in my zone, so I must take cuttings to overwinter.

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Strawberry Fields Forever') | Posted on June 21, 2017 ]

This is a very reliable and floriferous plant. It is one of the 1st daylilies I planted in my garden. It blooms early in the season and is a cheery spot in the flower border. I'll always have this one in my garden beds.

[ Butterfly Milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa) | Posted on June 20, 2017 ]

Lovely orange flowers much loved by butterflies. This plant is late to appear in spring, so be sure not to weed it out of your garden by mistake or plant something else in its place.

[ Chinese Evergreen (Aglaonema commutatum) | Posted on June 20, 2017 ]

This clump forming plant has green spear shaped leaves with silvery bands across it. It produces an uninteresting white spathe which may be followed by red berries. It is one of the easiest houseplants to grow, as it is a low light plant. If placed outdoors for the summer, avoid direct sun.

[ Lipstick Plant (Aeschynanthus micranthus) | Posted on June 20, 2017 ]

This is a lovely plant for the home and is easy to maintain. It has small variegated leaves and red blooms. It benefits greatly from being placed outdoors for the summer months. Be sure to cut the leaves back after blooming to maintain its neat size and appearance.

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Night Beacon') | Posted on June 8, 2017 ]

I have grown Night Beacon for a few years and it's a reliable rebloomer in my zone 8a garden. It's a lovely dark reddish purple color with a wide green throat. The bloom color is steadfast even in our hot sunny area. It's a nice addition to the front of a perennial border.

[ Prayer Plant (Maranta leuconeura) | Posted on October 26, 2016 ]

Prayer plants can be difficult to maintain indoors during the winter months. It's important to keep the plant in a humid area, near a sunny window, and make sure that the soil remains moist. If the leaves turn brown and curl up from lack of humidity, the plant may go dormant. Don't throw it away until after spring and when you can be sure that it is dead. It may come back from rhizomes.

[ Rhipsalis elliptica | Posted on October 26, 2016 ]

I have had this plant for about 3 years, and I am anxious to see it bloom. I keep mine in morning sun and it seems to like its position. These plants look better if placed outdoors in a shady spot during the summer months. As the weather turns cooler, the leaves take on a reddish tinge. In the shade, the plant's elongated stems remain green. It's fun to grow and easy to care for. This is a jungle cactus and should not be allowed to dry out completely.

[ Autumn Sage (Salvia greggii) | Posted on September 9, 2016 ]

In my zone 8a, salvia greggii overwinters well in the ground. It blooms from early spring to late fall, if it is kept deadheaded. It is also evergreen in my zone and tolerates our heat and humidity really well. The hummers love the red flowers, and I would not be without this plant. I love its relaxed look in the garden. It's a keeper.

[ Silver Squill (Ledebouria socialis) | Posted on September 9, 2016 ]

I left this plant in a ceramic bowl sitting on a patio table in full sun SC zone 8a for several weeks after repotting it. There were other potted plants obscuring it from my view, so I didn't realize that I'd left it there. To my surprise, it is not only surviving, but also thriving. (I expected to find a melted mush given the summer heat.) The plant looks tender, but it obviously is a very tough plant. I will move it to give it a little reprieve from the hot afternoon sun.

[ Lantana 'Cream Carpet' | Posted on June 30, 2016 ]

I have had this plant in my zone 8a garden for several years. It dies down to the ground, but comes back faithfully each spring, even if I do not give it extra protection during our winters. It is not a large plant. In fact it's a short mounding plant. Butterflies love it, but so do whiteflies in late summer. Other than that, it's a great low-maintenance plant and I highly recommend it.

[ Blackcurrant Sage (Salvia microphylla 'Hot Lips') | Posted on June 3, 2016 ]

I love growing this plant, as it looks different as the season goes on. I do find that it does not like as much sun as some of my other salvias. It sulks in full sun for me, so I had to move it to an area with filtered sun. It looks much better with the move.

[ Dusty Miller (Jacobaea maritima subsp. maritima) | Posted on February 25, 2016 ]

Dusty Miller grows well here in zone 8a, SC. It does like to be kept on the dry side, and gets limp if given much water. It produces yellow flowers, but most people cut them off, as they seem to detract from the beauty of the plant. Good plant for areas experiencing drought conditions. Mine is planted in full sun and I never water it. It only gets the rainfall we receive.
