[ Holiday Cactus (Schlumbergera 'Salvador Brazil') | Posted on March 1, 2016 ]

This plant is also known as Salvator Brazil, depending on the seller. My picture is of a Salvator Brazil.

[ Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum 'Atlantic') | Posted on August 23, 2014 ]

This is a Dutch release with white bands along the center of the leaves.

[ Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum 'Streaker') | Posted on August 23, 2014 ]

This plant has deep green leaves with a single, very bright, narrow ivory stripe down the center.

[ American Elm (Ulmus americana 'Princeton') | Posted on April 27, 2014 ]

The Princeton Elm was propagated from cuttings from an old elm tree that survived disease and was located in a cemetery in Princeton, NJ. The propagation took place at Princeton Nurseries, NJ. It is a lovely elm tree.

[ Yellow Chincherinchee (Ornithogalum dubium) | Posted on April 21, 2014 ]

Here are some additional tips for this plant.

I am told by a grower of Sun Star that this plant also sells as Orange Star, Yellow Star, Peach Star and Ivory Star. It is suggested the plant mix should be kept moist. The spent flower spikes at the base should be removed. If fertilizing you should only use half the label rate every other month. It also does well in bright indirect sunlight indoors.

[ Sweet Betsy (Calycanthus floridus 'Michael Lindsey') | Posted on April 8, 2014 ]

Michael Lindsey has a delightful fragrance.

[ Spider Plant (Chlorophytum viridescens 'Hawaiian') | Posted on April 6, 2014 ]

We know this plant as 'Hawaiian' but it is known also as 'Golden Glow'. It is similar in size to 'vittatum' , but every green leaf blade is centered with vivid ochre and rich champagne tones. This variegation fades over time, while still putting out variegated plantlets which also fade too but the variegation returns when removed from the mother plant and planted.

[ Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum 'Variegatum') | Posted on April 6, 2014 ]

Identifying factor of the 'variegatum' is that the leaves are GREEN with WHITE margins. Just the reverse of the 'vittatum'.

Some growers call it "reverse variegated".

[ Variegated Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum 'Vittatum') | Posted on April 6, 2014 ]

This particular plant is the most common of all Spiders. Identifying factors to remember are, the center of the leaves of this one is WHITE with the GREEN OUTSIDE MARGINS.

This plant is called "variegated" by some growers.

[ Christmas Cactus (Schlumbergera truncata 'Rare Yellow') | Posted on January 22, 2013 ]

The color of the bloom of the yellow (zygocactus) Christmas cactus blooms may vary from yellow to pinkish-yellow, to peach-yellow depending on several things i.e. temperature, pH in soil, and fertilizer content of the soil.
This would explain why a truly yellow colored flower is so difficult to find and keep it yellow when you have it home.

[ Dwarf Snowbush (Breynia disticha 'Nana') | Posted on January 22, 2013 ]

The 'nana' I have has been grown as a bonsai. They are an interesting plant. The bonsai is called dwarf snowflake. Cute idea since the larger bush is called dwarf snowbush.

[ African Gardenia (Mitriostigma axillare) | Posted on September 18, 2011 ]

This plant prefers a southern, eastern or western exposure. I keep mine in temperatures that go no lower than 60 deg. It will tolerate colder but not for long if the temperatures are above freezing.
It prefers 50% humidity or higher. If the leaves begin to crinkle it is a sign it needs more humidity.
Water when it gets dry. Saturate it until the water comes out the bottom of the pot.
They need light fertilizer. When active growing stops in the Winter stop fertilizing..
Pruning can be done any time of year if height becomes a problem.
This is a highly fragrant plant that blooms year round. JB

[ Gardenia (Gardenia jasminoides 'Frostproof') | Posted on September 18, 2011 ]

Frostproof also makes a wonderful houseplant if you have the space and lighting for it. All my plants are in containers because I move them into the greenhouse when the temperatures begin to fall. The fragrance of this plant is also very nice. It certainly adds to the beauty for those who can keep them in the ground. JB

[ Maid of Orleans (Jasminum sambac 'Maid of Orleans') | Posted on September 18, 2011 ]

This is a fast growing plant. Easy to grow.and very ornamental. The blooms last only one day.
I find it extremely easy to propagate, starting cuttings in both water and medium. I grow only in containers and in order to keep it under control you must keep it trimmed. I have also found nearly ripe wood cuttings taken late Summer do very well. Ripe wood cuttings in the Fall also take hold. Jasminum Sambac can be propagated by layers but I have never tried that method. JB

[ Gardenia (Gardenia jasminoides First LoveĀ® Aimee) | Posted on September 18, 2011 ]

I have been propagating both standard and regular Jasminoides 'Aimee' for three years.
The flowers can get as large as 3 to 5 inches in size. You can cut them and if maintained properly they can last as long as a week as cut flowers in floral designs.

I have found the following: The speed of growth of these plants is fast. They like a lot of water and do better if you let them get a wee bit dry between watering but they may not get completely dry or the leaves will turn and drop, even if dry a very short time. They love full sun if they have plenty of water daily. Normally they like sun and partial shade. I grow only in containers. One of the most enjoyable plants I have ever grown.
