[ Palmleaf poppymallow (Callirhoe pedata) | Posted on July 2, 2018 ]

I didn't take botany, so please bear with me as I try to sort this information: While trying to figure out the differences between Callirhoe digitata and Callirhoe pedata, I became confused because I often came across very conflicting information about the two winecups. It doesn't help that some sites even consider C. pedata a variety of C. digitata. The flowers look very similar, but if you look at the base of the plant, the leaves, and how it branches for flowering, you can see the difference.

C. digitata has thin finger-like leaves that are long and highly separated, and the flowering stem will branch and separate repeatedly (or randomly) for each individual flower, and each pedicel itself ends on one flower or can branch again and produce multiple flowers.

C. pedata has large fused palm-like leaves at the base that become smaller and more finger-like further up the plant, and the flowering stem will branch only once for each flower. Each pedicel ends on one solitary flower with no branching for further flowers. The pedicels are longer closer to the base of the plant and shorter near the end of the flowering branch, so the flowers are all more or less at the same height, assuming (in my case) the constant winds don't make the plant grow sideways. To me, the leaves of C. pedata look very similar to the leaves (and only the leaves, not the form or growth habit) of Callirhoe involucrata, and not at all like C. digitata.
