[ Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Brandywine, Glick's Strain') | Posted on April 13, 2018 ]

My husband has a direct connection to this tomato that we are trying this year for the first time. His ex-wife was the daughter of Issac Glick, who the tomato is named after.

[ Snow Pea (Lathyrus oleraceus 'Oregon Giant') | Posted on August 28, 2014 ]

In the past I have had trouble getting these seeds to germinate, even though I had fresh seeds. This year I started them in some guttering and then "slid" them into the ground. Some of the peas were 4" long and very sweet. We love snow peas, and this one, because the pods are still tender when large, makes picking enough for a meal very easy.

[ Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Russian 117') | Posted on August 28, 2014 ]

Russian 117 is an heirloom oxheart tomato that can get very large. It was the winner in "Largest tomato by weight" category this year in our garden club's tomato contest, weighing in at 1.72#. As an oxheart, it is a dense, meaty tomato that has a more acidic flavor. It is good eaten fresh and very good for cooking. The plant is a good producer of fruit as well.

[ Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Wes') | Posted on August 28, 2014 ]

Wes is an heirloom, oxheart-type tomato. It is a moderate producer with an earthy flavor, very unlike most tomatoes. I am not a fan of it, but I had market customers who requested it.

[ Jumpseed (Persicaria virginiana 'Lance Corporal') | Posted on August 28, 2014 ]

Likes a shady site, but will tolerate quite a bit of sun. This plant has grown to about 2' tall without the flower spikes. The blooms are insignificant, little red bumps on the stems. I like the striping in the foliage, even though it fades somewhat as the plant gets larger. Mine has reseeded easily, without becoming invasive.

[ Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Steakhouse Hybrid') | Posted on August 22, 2014 ]

Although none of my tomatoes reached the three pounds Burpee boasted about, this tomato was extremely productive, with a slightly acidic taste that made it a new favorite. We easily picked 40 lbs. or more of fruit from each plant. It is a very meaty tomato, which makes it perfect for slicing.

[ Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Soldacki') | Posted on August 22, 2014 ]

I grew this tomato for the first time this year. I did not find it to be a very productive tomato although the taste was very good. My fruits were just average or small in size. It is a pink color with green shoulders. It did ripen fairly early in the season for me.

[ Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Steakhouse Hybrid') | Posted on July 2, 2014 ]

This is a new hybrid from Burpee, which claims the fruit can reach 3 lbs. I haven't had one that heavy yet, but they are BIG and it is a very good tasting, slightly acidic, tomato. It's a keeper in our line up.

[ Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Bolseno') | Posted on February 28, 2014 ]

I originally started to just grow heirlooms but decided to try this one simply because it was on sale. Were we ever surprised! It was super productive with a nice acidity that reminded me of tomatoes I ate growing up. A bit smaller tomato but the amount of fruit it set more than made up for it. We now grow this one every year.

[ Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Aunt Ruby's German Green') | Posted on February 28, 2014 ]

Very big and flavorful green heirloom tomato. It was a surprise to our customers just how good it tasted when we gave samples at market. It has been added to our keeper list.

[ Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Aker's West Virginia') | Posted on February 28, 2014 ]

I tried this tomato last year and I was very pleased with it. It behaved more like a hybrid than an heirloom in shape, conformity, and productivity. It was a very bad year for tomatoes here because of all the rain, yet this tomato produced very well and was very tasty. I have added it to my list of keepers!

[ Swiss Chard (Beta vulgaris var. cicla 'Bright Lights') | Posted on January 5, 2014 ]

The bright colors make this variety an excellent choice for market sale, and it is an easy crop to grow, withstanding some very cold temperatures. Chard is high in iron and is delicious chopped and stir fried with a sprinkling of bacon and, at the very end of cooking, a bit of grated Jarlsberg cheese.

[ Lettuce (Lactuca sativa 'Green Ice') | Posted on January 5, 2014 ]

When I was growing up, we always grew Black Seeded Simpson leaf lettuce, and even though I ate it, I was never really a fan unless it was drenched in salad dressing. Of course, being a kid, I didn't know there were other kinds of leaf lettuces. I just associated all leaf lettuce with Black Seeded Simpson.

When I started having my own garden, I started trying new varieties and that is when I ran across Green Ice. It changed my whole outlook on leaf lettuce! Green Ice has a frilly edge, is a lighter green and, most importantly to me, it has a thick, crunchy rib that gives it a texture I associate with crisp head lettuces. I still grow Black Seeded Simpson, along with several other varieties of leaf lettuce, but Green Ice is my all-time favorite. I have even made converts when selling at market because of the crunchiness of Green Ice leaf lettuce. Green Ice also is slower to bolt and turn bitter than some other leaf lettuces.

[ Cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata 'Gonzales') | Posted on January 4, 2014 ]

This variety of cabbage is perfect for those with limited space or for high density planting. The perfect size for 2-4 servings with tight heads that rarely split. Very similar to Stonehead.

[ Cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata 'Stone Head') | Posted on January 4, 2014 ]

Stonehead cabbage is one of my favorites to grow. It is compact, very firm with a short core and never splits. It is a hybrid so any saved seeds may not come true. This is an early variety.

[ Penstemon 'Arabesque Red' | Posted on December 10, 2013 ]

This is also available as seed. This is not a recommendation, just for information purposes.

[ Sweet Pepper (Capsicum annuum 'Nardello') | Posted on August 10, 2013 ]

This pepper is very prolific and is one of the sweetest peppers I have ever tasted. Traditionally used in Italy as a frying pepper, it is very good eaten raw as well. It is an open pollinated variety.

[ Hummingbird Mint (Agastache aurantiaca 'Raspberry Daiquiri') | Posted on August 3, 2013 ]

This agastache is easily started from seed and blooms the first year. Mine got about 4' high but we had an unusually large amount of rain this year.

[ Crimson Clover (Trifolium incarnatum) | Posted on April 11, 2013 ]

We grow crimson clover every fall as a green manure and let it flower for the bees in spring then mow and till under. A very useful and very pretty plant!

[ Lithodora (Glandora prostrata 'Grace Ward') | Posted on March 1, 2013 ]

I cannot seem to keep this one alive. Any suggestions? I'm in GA.
