[ Rabbit's Foot Fern (Davallia canariensis) | Posted on October 3, 2012 ]

This plant has been through the mill. It's 25 years old (yes 25). It belonged to my father in South Florida and was much larger and fuller before he passed in 1995. I brought it to north Florida, hung it out back and sort of forgot about it. After several winters and freezes it was barely there. But, every spring, a little bit of new growth would show up. I finally rescued it and put it in a fern basket several years ago. Now it thrives and I bring it indoors on freeze nights. It would not give up on me so I finally decided I would not give up on it!

[ Avocado (Persea americana 'Gainesville') | Posted on October 1, 2012 ]

This variety is supposed to be cold tolerant down to 25 degrees, but I always take it inside my garage when a freeze is coming. I'm waiting to see if it will bloom in the container.

[ Chinese Elm (Ulmus parvifolia) | Posted on October 1, 2012 ]

Really fast growing tree. Seedlings must be kept under control continuously. They pop up everywhere in the yard and garden.

[ Common Staghorn Fern (Platycerium bifurcatum) | Posted on September 27, 2012 ]

I have to take this one down and protect it on cold winter nights (zone 9a), but it has thrived for the past 15 years.

[ Spur Flower (Plectranthus Mona Lavender) | Posted on September 27, 2012 ]

I have had this plant for several years. It dies back in the winter (zone 9a) and comes back strong in the spring. It blooms constantly in the summer and fall. Emerald green leaves and beautiful flowers.
