[ Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Hillbilly') | Posted on June 27, 2023 ]

This was the second year I have grown Hillbilly tomato. I am charmed by the fruit. It has a beautiful color resembling a ripe peach. The flavor is light with an almost citrus flavor but does not have the acidic bite that many tomatoes have.

A single plant delivered a dozen tomatoes while not growing in optimum conditions. I will trial it in an earthbox next season and am sure I will not be disappointed.

[ Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Sleeping Lady') | Posted on June 20, 2023 ]

This is the third year I have grown the Sleeping Lady tomato. This year, the harvest has convinced me that I will always grow it.

I have harvested 57 tomatoes from two plants. There are still quite a few green fruits on both plants.

Everyone that has tasted them asks me what they are and then asks if I will start seeds for them next year.

The tomato is a dark red color. The tomato is meaty and the taste is sweet, almost smoky. It does not have the acid bite that many tomatoes have.

I have really enjoyed them this season and will continue to keep this tomato on my "must grow" list.

[ Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Cerise Orange') | Posted on June 28, 2022 ]

These are a tasty cherry tomato, very sweet and mellow.

I noticed two of the first five tomatoes harvested had split skin. The evening before there was an immeasurable rain. I suspect the cool rain caused these to split. The plants have been consistently watered and there was not enough rain to have caused this damage to have happened by water intake.

The color is a bit confusing. The tomato name is Cerise Orange, the flesh description is gold but the color of these fruit is a pale yellow.

[ Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Hillbilly') | Posted on June 10, 2022 ]

Growing this for the first time and sampled the first tomato this morning. It was mellow with no acid but a wonderful taste and texture. My first inclination was that it was not ripe but felt soft so I picked it. It was just right!

[ Turnip (Brassica rapa 'Hakurei') | Posted on February 7, 2022 ]

I harvested the first of the Hakurei turnips on Feb 7th when I saw the tops of a few were above the surface of the soil. They are the size of a ping pong ball.

I sampled one while raw and it was tender with a mellow taste. It did not have the bite of a radish although I have read they will with age when allowed to grow larger. Very tasty. They will make an excellent addition to fresh salads.

I hope to continue growing these. They have survived some lengthy subfreezing temperatures with no added protection. Definitely a suitable winter crop here. I need to try these during the warmer growing seasons as well.

[ Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Reverend Morrow’s Long Keeper') | Posted on August 10, 2021 ]

This is an indeterminate tomato vine. Seeds were started in the middle of June. Planted inground by July. There have been enough cooler nights that these tomatoes received pollination. The Reverend Morrows' tomato plant has three tomatoes on it. It also still is blooming but nighttime temperatures will negate pollination for now.

[ Butternut Squash (Cucurbita moschata 'Butterbush') | Posted on July 15, 2021 ]

This Butterbush squash makes a manageable size squash plant for containers or raised beds.

The fruit are personal size. They should provide enough for a meal.

[ Winter Squash (Cucurbita moschata 'Butterbaby') | Posted on July 15, 2021 ]

The Butterbaby squash is a well mannered plant. The vines traveled no more than four to six feet.

The fruit size measures 3 - 4 inches in length. It should provide a single serving portion.

This fruit was harvested in the middle of July. I have also started a fall crop transplanted in ground in the middle of July as well.

[ Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Mama Leone') | Posted on July 13, 2021 ]

This vining tomato is 8 feet tall and growing. It has produced a number of medium to large sized tomatoes. Not at all the size I expected from a Roma type tomato, the tomatoes measure from 2 to 3 inches in length. The fruit is meaty and tasty.

[ Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Black Plum') | Posted on July 13, 2021 ]

This little roma type tomato grows on a tidy five foot tall vine. The clusters of Black Plum will not easily release their fruit until the tomato is ripe enough. I find when I reach out to feel how ripe they are, the ripened tomatoes will drop into the palm of my hand. They have a sweet and mellow taste and make a nice addition to a meal or just for nibbling. The Black Plum averages about one inch in length.

[ Bush Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris 'Jade') | Posted on November 29, 2020 ]

I have really admired this Jade bean. A small 3' x 3' plot has supplied me in green beans for a couple of months.

The vine is a sturdy upright plant allowing the beans to grow straight and clean. The beans have no strings and are still tender and tasty even when the older ones have been overlooked.

The fall planting was successful. I have ordered more seeds and will try succession planting the next spring.

[ Orchid Cactus (Epiphyllum 'Dwarf White') | Posted on August 31, 2020 ]

This is a manageable size for an Epiphyllum. The plant is in a 6" container and the bloom is the size of a quarter.

This plant surprised me with this bloom on August 31, 2020 after I had repotted it two weeks earlier. It was well watered by Hurricane Laura less than a week before blooming.

[ Green Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris 'Trionfo Violetto') | Posted on June 14, 2020 ]

This beautiful bean is listed as a snap bean. It is a snap/pole bean. It has climbed to the top of the tomato stakes which is over 5 feet tall.
The blooms are a lovely purple as are the vines.

[ Cucumber (Cucumis sativus 'Early Cluster') | Posted on June 14, 2020 ]

I planted four plants that have been delivering cucumbers for three weeks now. Many days from four to six fruits a day. I am loving this one and will grow it in the future.

[ Basil (Ocimum basilicum 'New Guinea') | Posted on May 19, 2020 ]

I have grown and loved this basil for years now.
I just realized there was no photo in the database so am submitting a photo of the immature plants.
This has a floral basil fragrance and has been the all time favorite basil for me.

[ Dianthus Venti Parfait™ Crimson Eye | Posted on February 9, 2020 ]

I love this Dianthus. Although it is not fragrant, it is a long lasting bloomer. I received a tray of these in December 2019. With little care other than water and an occasional haircut, it has bloomed nonstop for over a year. I have covered the container on frosty nights. It not only endured the cold but our summer heat as well. What is not to like!

[ Lettuce (Lactuca sativa 'Parris Island') | Posted on December 6, 2019 ]

Seedlings transplanted well.
Plants grew quickly and developed into sturdy heads of lettuce.
This is currently my second favorite lettuce, following Little Gem.

[ Red Romaine Lettuce (Lactuca sativa 'Cimarron') | Posted on December 6, 2019 ]

I find this romaine does well with a fall planting in my zone 8a.
It has shaken off frosts and freezing temperatures.
This lettuce does well when transplanted from seedlings.
The leaves have a rich red color and a delicate texture.

[ Pickling Cucumber (Cucumis sativus 'Calypso') | Posted on May 21, 2019 ]

This is my first season to grow Calypso. It produces early. I found it was a crisp cucumber with an excellent taste when eaten raw.

[ Cucumber (Cucumis sativus 'Homemade Pickles') | Posted on July 1, 2018 ]

This is the first year I have grown Homemade. I found the immature pickles to be too prickly to eat the rind. I would have to peel them. The taste when raw was excellent.

When I allowed them to mature to approximately 6 inches in length, I didn't care to eat the rind as it is too tough. At this size they do make a wonderful crisp fermented pickle.

The plants are more durable than other cucumbers I have grown in the past. They are still going strong and producing well. At this time in the season other cucumber plants I have grown have succumbed to a virus or wilt.

I will gladly grow these again next season.
