[ Chinese Lantern (Alkekengi officinarum) | Posted on July 1, 2017 ]

Planted Chinese Lanterns last Fall, and find it totally fascinating to watch grow.
Think it would be a great educational plant for children, as the stages of growth are so explosive and clearly visible.
Watching it grow could go a long way to fostering a love of plants and growing things.
Just a fun and profound plant to grow!

[ Rose (Rosa 'Mathilda') | Posted on June 21, 2017 ]

This is a wonderful , compact, long blooming rose. It is a workhorse in my garden. I purchased 4 plants last Fall and they bloomed till frost. The color is a good blender for a mixed garden bed or border. A very useful rose.

[ Glossy Abelia (Linnaea 'Canyon Creek') | Posted on August 21, 2013 ]

Abelia x grandiflora 'Canyon Creek' has been a stellar performer here.

It flowers late in summer and through autumn. Bees and butterflies find it attractive.

This beautiful shrub has a graceful growth habit and is easy to shape to your needs.

It provides welcome color and is a nice accent anywhere. I have it growing in a bed near the driveway at a corner of the path to our front door and I get many favorable comments about it.

[ Hen and Chicks (Sempervivum 'Silver Angel') | Posted on August 1, 2013 ]

This is a very beautiful, tiny little arachnoideum type.
It provides useful contrast in form and shape in a pot with other Sempervivum.
Such an elegant little plant.

[ Hen and Chicks (Sempervivum calcareum 'Sir William Lawrence') | Posted on August 1, 2013 ]

Sempervivum calcareum Sir William Lawrence is one of my favorites.
It has been a slow reproducer, but very beautiful and distinctive.
This is one which I would not want to be without.

[ Crape Myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica 'Tuscarora') | Posted on July 20, 2013 ]

I have high accolades for the Tuscarora Crape Myrtle.

Tuscarora has a broad vase shape and is highly mildew resistant, having exfoliating bark and red/orange fall leaf color.

It does take about 3 years to get established enough to produce its best, most lush flower display. But it is a carefree, long-flowering, heavy flower producer.

We planted 18 Tuscaroras along our driveway, behind a shorter growing evergreen hedge.

Tuscarora makes a wonderful screen, at 18-25 feet tall, and an eye-catching display starting in mid-July here, blooming until fall.

I have found conflicting reports on their hardiness zones, however. Some sources report hardiness Zones 6-9, where others state Zones 7A-9.

[ Hen and Chicks (Sempervivum 'Aross') | Posted on July 8, 2013 ]

Aross is a very pretty plant with a nice, graceful growth habit. It fills in quickly and is a very good reproducer.

[ Bee Balms (Monarda) | Posted on June 26, 2013 ]

Monarda is so quick and easy from seed. Direct seeding allows you to create swaths of Bee Balm color exactly where you want it.

The hummers and bees fight it out, and it's interesting to watch the hummers chase the bees away.

The scented foliage is said to have been used to make tea, and the scent is heady.

I have always made sure to have a few varieties of Monarda in my garden. There are many interesting colors available now. It was one of the first plants I got when I started gardening over 30 years ago.

Bringing the scented leaves into the house and placing them in a bowl creates instant heaven!

All in all, a wonderful addition to the garden.

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Scarlet Pimpernel') | Posted on June 19, 2013 ]

This is is the largest flowering Daylily in my garden so far this year.
The flower is measuring 10 1/2 inches in diameter. It is also very prolific, producing many buds.
A good one for planting at a distance, as you just can't miss it!

[ Dame's Rocket (Hesperis matronalis) | Posted on June 15, 2013 ]

This is an easy plant to grow by direct seeding in fall or early spring.

The only problem I have found is that the leaves look very much like a weed and can easily be eradicated by overzealous weeding.

[ Hen and Chicks (Sempervivum 'Jeramia') | Posted on June 15, 2013 ]

Very photogenic and eyecatching Sempervivum. Difficult to capture its color nuances with the camera.

[ Hen and Chicks (Sempervivum tectorum 'Grammens') | Posted on June 10, 2013 ]

Huge and very prolific. A star sempervivum for me.

[ Hen and Chicks (Sempervivum 'Astrid') | Posted on June 3, 2013 ]

Such a pretty growing habit on this plant.

[ Rose (Rosa 'Winner's Circle') | Posted on May 29, 2013 ]

This is sometimes referred to as the Climbing Knock Out rose, as it is a constant repeat bloomer, hybridized by the hybridizer of the Knock Out rose.

[ Hen and Chicks (Sempervivum 'Silver Cup') | Posted on May 29, 2013 ]

This plant is a rapid increaser for me and is fast becoming a favorite arachnoideum type.

Pretty growth habit.

[ Hen and Chicks (Sempervivum calcareum 'Pink Pearl') | Posted on June 27, 2012 ]

One of my favorite Sempervivum. Striking plant during all seasons. Easy to grow here

[ Bigleaf Hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla 'Nikko Blue') | Posted on May 22, 2012 ]

My favorite Blue Hydrangea, and a signature plant of my home, Cape Cod. They can be seen everywhere on that small peninsula, blooming all summer until frost. They thrive there best with ample moisture and full sun.
However full sun in New England does not compare to full sun in the South, so this plant likes partial shade in the South, unless an irrigation system provides them with daily watering.

[ Red Spruce (Picea rubens) | Posted on March 27, 2012 ]

Reddish brown bark and shoots give this spruce its name because its wood is light colored, much used for musical instruments and the source for spruce gum. Densely set needles are yellow-green.
