XXX Xeric plant. LOVES sun, does NOT like wet feet, does NOT like heavy moisture. I have mine planted in a rock garden and it seems to do quite well. A bit spreading, gone from a little 3" plant to over 2' in 3 years. Bright orange flowers, but VERY low to the ground, so they can get lost in tall vegetation. Hummers do seem to find it, though.

This tough plant is suffering with my other xeric selections growing in part-sun at the feet of a huge Blue Spruce where almost nothing does really well. The Zauschneria garretti has slowly spread a bit although growth is sparse overall (no doubt due to severe competition from the spruce). Its sparky blooms brighten the spot and hummers do like it. Other spruce root victims that have persisted for several years include salvias, asters, thyme, echinacea, milkweed, sedum, and a 2 year old Desert 4 O'clock. Zone 5, northern Utah.
