What an interesting plant, not just for the bloom.
I just learned that the ovary, where the seed pod is formed after fall blooming, is stored under ground in the base of the perianth tube.
What looks like the stem of the flower is actually a tube of petal-like tissue and is stored in the bulb underground.

The seed pod is brought to the surface when the leaves appear in the spring. You can see the maturing seed pot in the center of the large leaves.

The seeds are harvested by ants. They feed on the aril (or arillus), which is a specialized outgrowth on the seed. After eating it the seed is left in storage and ready to germinate when the time is right.
