I've only seen this cultivar once, that was at Jenkins Arboretum in southeast Pennsylvania. This cultivar has many more than double petals as 'Plena.' It is sterile and is reproduced only by the division of rhizomes. One plant that mutated was discovered in 1916 on a large property in the woods in Dayton, Ohio by a Mr. Guido von Weber. He marked it and was able to divide it in 1919 and gave one division to the Arnold Arboretum which died out. One division died right away for one friend. Another friend, M. Henry Teuscher, was the manager at the Montreal Botanical Garden in Canada and he was successful in propagating it more, and it passed on to other places. The original plant disappeared. This plant is sold by a number of specialty nurseries.
