Slow-growing, multibranched tree aloe with red flowers in winter which comes from a winter rainfall area. Does well in a container for years when young. Does not tolerate very high temperatures (above 105°F/40°C); from a mild climate with average temperatures about 70°F. Susceptible to rot (requires excellent drainage) but enjoys more water than most aloes, especially during winter. A highly branched shrub for most of its life, only reaching its full potential size after many years. Not usually a good long term container plant. Grows well from cuttings or seed. In exposed situations, especially during summer, the leaf tips often desiccate and turn black, resulting in a less than perfect appearance. The only aloe with a corky bark. May be self fertile.

In a recent revision this plant was placed in a separate genus (Kumara), along with the former Aloe haemanthifolia, because DNA evidence suggests they are quite distant from the other aloes.
