Slow-growing small to medium agave from lower elevations in Sonora and Sinaloa, with relatively few powder-blue glaucous leaves (often marked by dramatic bud imprints and crossbanding) in an open rosette. May be solitary or offset sparingly. Branched inflorescence to 8-10 feet tall.

Suitable for pit baking and apparently used as food by Yaquis and Mayos. Perhaps because of this, it is uncommon in habitat. The common name "mezcal ceniza" reflects its food use and the ash color of the leaves.
