Small agave with white bud imprints and marginal hairs, to 5-12 inches (usually 6-8 inches) wide. Usually solitary, sometimes offsetting sparingly. From southern Arizona and northern Sonora, at altitudes from 1900 to 5500 feet; frost tolerant to about 15°F. Enjoys full sun in cool, coastal climates but looks better with some protection in the low desert. Best form with strong light and limiting water. Monocarpic, though usually slow to die after flowering. An excellent container plant, but easily lost among other plants in the landscape.

May be confused with A. polianthiflora when not in bloom, however the flowers are different (pale yellow instead of reddish pink). May be similar to A. toumeyana subsp. bella, a small version of that species, which has more offsets and denser rosettes, with thinner marginal hairs. Two subspecies occur in Sonora: Agave (Agave parviflora subsp. flexiflora) (with downward flexed flowers); and Yecora Agave (Agave parviflora subsp. densiflora) (larger, longer leaves and tightly packed flowers).
