Solitary blue-green highland aloe from South Africa with unusual and distinctive compact red flowers. Leaves are erect or incurved, often with spines on the lower surface near the tip. Inflorescences may have 0-6 branches and appear in summer or winter. Racemes are tall, cylindrical, and densely flowered. Flowers are red, downward pointing, curved inward, and wider in the middle, with far exerted style and stamens.

There are 2 geographically distinct varieties of this aloe: Reitz's Aloe (Aloe reitzii var. reitzii) (leaves 3-5 inches wide; racemes to 3 feet tall; bracts 1/2 inch; flowers in summer) and Vryheid Aloe (Aloe reitzii var. vernalis) (leaves 2-3.5 inches wide; racemes to 30 inches; bracts 1/4 inch; flowers in winter).

This species is related to A. gerstneri and A. petricola (similar flowers, spines on leaf undersides). It is intolerant of extreme heat in cultivation.
