A noble, architectural plant. Grown for foliage. Coarse and vigorous. Rhizome is thick and black, so large that they're not easily handled as a container plant; probably why so seldom offered in nurseries.
Shouldn't be planted where animals might browse on toxic leaves; unfortunately, they appear to be non-toxic to slugs, their greatest enemy.
Name means 'truly black'. From seed 8 to 10 years to flower, however, after 4 years, garden ready as foliage well-developed by then.
