Prolifically clustering Mammillaria, up to 3 feet wide (or more) with dozens of heads. Spiny. Axils have wool and bristles. Purplish pink flowers. Delicious fruit of the same color (about the best Mammillaria fruit I have tried). Solitary forms do exist.

From the desert side of the Sierra Madre Oriental in northeastern Mexico (Hidalgo, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas).

Crested plants also form wide sprawling mounds over time.

Two subspecies are recognized: Biznaga de la Hacienda Penasco (Mammillaria compressa subsp. compressa) (no central spines, offsetting) and Mother of Hundreds (Mammillaria compressa subsp. centralifera) (1-2 central spines, often solitary).
