Attractive clumping cactus with globose or egg-shaped stems and dense, furry spines. There are no central spines but several dozen (>100) white or pale yellow radial spines per areole. Axils have wool and bristles. Red-spined versions exist in cultivation (potentially of hybrid origin). From Tamaulipas, Mexico. Vulnerable to rot in cultivation, especially when water is allowed to be trapped under the spines. Flowers are white or pink and fruit is greenish.
