Excellent resistance to Dutch Elm disease. Quite upright in its early years, becoming broader later. Also known as Ulmus Lutece.

This cultivar is a cross of the 'Morton' ( 'Accolade') x the 'Vanguard' cultivars of the David Elm (Ulmus davidiana japonica ), that was formerly named just the Japanese Elm (Ulmus japonica), which may be also native to parts of the continent of eastern Asia. (The David Elm trees found in western China were once classified as the Wilson Elm of Ulmus wilsoniana, but that name was recently dropped out of taxonomy.) The Triumph Elm was released into the nursery trade in 1998 from Morton Arboretum in Lisle, IL, to be another better form of Asiatic elm that does not get Dutch Elm Disease, and it also does not get Elm Yellows Disease (a mycoplasm disease spread by leafhopper insects) that can be fatal to elms. Dr. George Ware headed up the elm selection program at Morton Arboretum a good number of years. For an Asiatic elm, it has larger leaves, which are lustrous and darker green, and this cultivar looks to me like the best selection of these new hybrid elms. A number of Asiatic elms have small leaves and are rather twiggy in habit and are not as good looking as many American or European Elms. I visited my homeland of the west suburbs of Chicago, Illinois, in September 2019 and saw a good number of this elm cultivar planted around as a street tree and in various shopping center & industrial park, & business park landscapes, so it is becoming popular there.
