    For some reason the common name "Tahitian Hat Plant" has been attached to this plant and I'm guessing it has something to do with this plant's specific epithet of "tettensis".

    HOWEVER,
    "tettensis" does NOT mean "of or from Tahiti", it means "of or from Tete".

    Tete is the name of one of Mozambique's ten provinces and also of that province's capital city.

    Note how Mozambique is a country in southeast Africa while Tahiti is a French colonial era holdover in eastern Polynesia which is nowhere near the place the plant is actually named after.
