This is a rare species only found in some spots in the Appalachians of West Virginia Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, northern Georgia & Alabama, and a spot in Louisiana in wet areas near streams and creeks. There is concern that it is not reproducing much by seed because just one clone of the plant is found in each of the various spots; most reproduction is by suckering. It is a pretty plant and it does grow well in regular landscapes. I found one good specimen in the Appalachian Collection of Morton Arboretum in USDA Zone 5a in part shade. Morris Arboretum in Philadelphia, PA, has an excellent specimen in full sun near a run.
