An annual grass. A short season crop
Oldest of the cultivated millets (2000 to 1000 BC in China)
Usually grown for hay or silage. Some seed incorporated into finch and wild bird feeds.
Several landraces have been developed over time and include what is referred to as Common, Siberian, Hungarian, a/o German Foxtail.
Seed is encased in hulls, can be white, red, yellow, or purple. Plants self pollinate a lot. 60 days to reach the heading stage.
