Solitary or occasionally offsetting, cylindrical cactus from southern Baja Califonia with yellow spines and white flowers bearing pinkish brown midstripes.

Island endemic from the former Cerralvo Island, recently renamed Jacques Cousteau Island, in the Gulf of California near La Paz. The species name is a corruption of the island's old name. A second Mammillaria species, Mammillaria evermanniana, is also endemic to this island, with wider, globose stems and wooly axils.
